Fiction
[made in Israel]
The Syrian Bride
A young woman living in the Golan Heights is betrothed to a man who lives in Damascus. The film is a sympathetic portrayal of the lives of the villagers in the Occupied Golan, and an ironic look at the bureaucracy governing the border crossing between Israel and Syria.
Rana’s Wedding
A young Palestinian woman living in East Jerusalem has to decide what to do when her father moves to Cairo. Should she stay and marry her boyfriend or escape a difficult and dangerous situation with her father.
Paradise Now
Two young Palestinian men are drawn in by a resistance organization seeking candidates for suicide bomber missions. The difficulties of their lives and the agonizing choices they must make are depicted.
Private
An Italian production company and director, with an Arabic cast featuring Mohammed Bakri, produced this drama of a Palestinian family whose home has been ‘occupied’ by Israeli Soldiers. Based on a true story.
Documentaries
Jenin, Jenin
Produced and Directed by Israeli Palestinian movie star, Mohammed Bakri.
A deeply disturbing film that explores the impact on the people of the city of Jenin of an overwhelming Israeli onslaught in 2002 following the beginning of the 2nd Intifada. [You can watch it on Google Films online]
I did some research on this subject as what actually happened in Jenin was hotly contested. You can find a blog entry on my blog which talks about this research. Israel barred the press and human rights observers and aid workers access to the town until several days after the end of the onslaught. They then rejected the findings of the aid workers and the statements of the survivors about the degree of violence used there and the number of casualties. Sound familiar?
Peace, Propaganda and the Promised Land
Shows and explains how the press creates an unbalanced impression of the Israeli Palestinian conflict. Uses the situation as an example of the use of propaganda to manage public reaction. Excellent teaching tool. It comes with a lengthy bibliography of sources of information categorized by political affiliation.
Arabs and Terrorism
The film presents an insight filled East/West dialog on the subject of terrorism. The viewer also gets to meet some well know leaders of alleged terrorist organizations like Hezbollah and Hamas. It crossed my mind on seeing this film, that ‘terrorism’ is the definition of the enemy on both sides of any ‘asymmetric’ war.
Gaza Strip
A look at the stress and disruption of the lives of the people caused by constant incursions by the IDF into Gaza. I found the images shocking. It is hard to imagine living in a war zone as active as the one portrayed in this documentary which was filmed in 2001, around the time Ariel Sharon became Prime Minister of Israel.
Death in Gaza
A pair of British filmmakers set out to make a film about the indoctrination of children into the world of violence. Their plan is to film in a Palestinian city (it turns out to be Rafah) for a while, then go to Israel and do the same. Unfortunately, before they were done filming in Palestine, the Director of the film is killed by an Israeli tank.
Frontiers of Dreams/Children of Shatila
Shows the lives of Palestinians living in the Shatila refugee camp outside of Beruit, their connection with the land and with their relatives in Israel, and a children’s program that aims to connect teenagers.
Encounter Point
A support group composed of Palestinian and Israeli individuals that have lost loved ones in the violence that continues between their two groups.
Chronicle of a Disappearance
A wry look by a young man who just finished his degree in the US and is visiting home in Bethlehem.
